The Patriots have recently signed another defensive back, Leigh Bodden. Bodden recently played for the 0-16 Lions but was released because of a big bonus that would have kicked in, in his second year. The Lions saw somehting in him while playing for a Bilichick disciple Romeo, O Romeo and the Cleveland Brownies. He was traded to the Lions for superstar DT Shaun Rogers. Bodden only had the only interception for the Lions defensive backs last season. In 2007 he had a career high 6 picks.
One of the Patriots biggest areas of need was defensive back and they have certainly adressesed that need with the signing of Springs and Bodden. Team them up with Ellis Hobbs and youngins Wheatley and Whilite; and the Patriots secondary went from poor to above average. Bodden and Springs are huge upgrades over Lewis Sanders and any of the other CBs that filled in last season.
Bodden also expressed his interest in playing for a champion after not winning a game last season. He also said that he would like to play for more than one season in New England:
""It just didn't come to terms with the money that both of us could agree to with a long-term deal, so we just got the one-year deal done, pretty much go play there, have a solid year. The Patriots always are destined to make the playoffs. Finally, I can hopefully shoot for that, make the playoffs, play good in the playoffs and hit free agency again. But I’d rather not. New England is a great team. I would rather just re-sign with them, and hopefully we can just come to terms hopefully during the season, if not, then after the season."
