Patriots make a splash and trade for pass rushing Derrick Burgess

By: Greg

The Patriots needed a pass rusher since Mike Vrabel's departure. They did not get one in the draft as many expected. They didnt trade the world for Julius Peppers. They didnt grab Jason Taylor. But now they got their man. Derrick Burgess was traded to the Patriots for undisclosed draft picks (rumor is 3rd and conditional 4th or 5th). This trade has been talked about for a while now. Derrick has been upset with his current contract with the Raiders where he is in the final year of a five year contract. He has been holding out of da Raiiiders camp demanding a trade or an out right release.

Derrick plays outside linebacker/defensive end. He has been in the league for 8 seasons starting out with the Iggles. In his career he has 47 sacks. He has been to two Pro Bowls in his career (2005, 2006). In 2005 he led the league with 16 sacks followed by 11 sacks in 2006. Last year he played in just 10 games but had 3.5 sacks and 24 tackles.

In the 3-4 defense Burgess will be an outside linebacker especially on rush downs. This move bumps Crable out of the starting line up but he still will get plenty of playing time. He may not sound as good as Jason Taylor or Julius Peppers but I believe he will have a huge impact on this defense. Looking at the defense the glaring need was a pass rush and this move pretty much elimnates that need. He can also play on the line if needed on passing downs. Burgess will thrive in a winning environment and be an immediate impact on the Patriots.

  1. This move seems like it would say a lot more about Crable, Guyton, and Woods then it does about Burgess. I'm glad the pats went after a veteran pass rusher, but I think it could really stunt the growth of the youngsters at the same time.
