QB Matt Gutierrez released; QB Andrew Walter signed

By: Greg

Third string quarterback Matt Gutierrez has been released by the Patriots. Matt was cut last year but after Brady going down he was immediately signed back to the squad. After a solid preseason last year many were clamoring for Gutierrrez to be the back up to Brady over Matt Cassell (and because of Cassell's horrible preseason). The Gutierrez released gives the Pats room to sign a veteran QB and that guy is Andrew Walter.

Walter who was last played for Da Raiiiiders was a third round pick out of Arizona State.

"Walter has started nine of 15 games and completed 174 of 333 passes for 1,919 yards and three touchdowns. After spending his rookie season as the third quarterback in 2005, Walter saw significant action in 2006. He started eight of 12 games and completed 147 of 276 passes for 1,677 yards and three touchdowns. Walter saw action in three games with one start during the 2007-08 campaigns. Walter was waived by Oakland on July 30, 2009."

Walter provides the Patriots something that they have not had for two years: a veteran QB with starting experience. This guy does have talent but he was stuck playing in the Black Hole with no WRs and 3 different head coaches. Walter will push Kevin O' Connell for the back up position. This is a solid pick up, I never saw Matt Gutierrez being an NFL ready quarterback. Walter with his talent came come in and provide competition for O'Connell and give the Pats a veteran back up with real playing and starting experience.
