Welcome Brandon Spike to the Patriots

By: Greg
What a great football pick! The Patriots have selected a real tough football player in Brandon Spikes. Spikes' stats and play on the field are out of this world. But his combine numbers were horrible. Which is why he fell all the way to the late second round. Spikes has top 10 football skills but people were afraid that his 5.0 forty time would not translate to the NFL. BB does. This pick was excellent. Spikes can flat out play. Team him with Mayo and they will have a dynamic ILB duo for years to come.
As far as the speed goes, Spikes can play first and second down and Gary Guyton an excellent pass coverage linebacker but subpar regualr linebacker can come in. It works out perfectly.
For his career Spikes has 307 tackles, 6 interceptions and 31.5 tackles for a loss! He was the leader of a crazy good defense. In his sophomore year he had 131 tackles in a 12 game college season.

NFL Draftcountdown scouting report:
Strengths:

Excellent size with long arms --- Fantastic instincts --- Aggressive and active with a non-stop motor --- Is tough, strong and powerful --- A reliable tackler who can deliver the big hit --- Able to take on and shed blockers --- Terrific effort in pursuit --- Good pass rusher/blitzer --- Nice awareness in coverage --- Plays with a nasty demeanor --- Extremely competitive --- Very high football IQ --- Team Leader --- Durable --- A Great Work Ethic --- Has a ton of experience against elite competition.
Weaknesses:

Extreme lack of speed and range --- Stiff with average athleticism --- Is not very quick and lacks a burst to close --- Plays too tall --- Gets out of control at times --- Could be a liability in coverage --- Upside is Limited.
Notes:

Was a three-year starter for the Gators --- Named 1st Team All-SEC in 2007 and 2009 --- A 1st Team All-American in 2009 --- Was a team captain as a junior and senior and a member of the Football Leadership Committee --- Cousin of NFL Linebacker Takeo Spikes --- Brother, Breyon Middlebrooks, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole --- Holds the Gators career record for interception returns for touchdowns with 4 --- Suspended for a game in 2009 when video surfaced of him attempting to gouge the eyes of an opponent --- Wore #51 in honor of Dick Butkus --- Was able to overcome a lack of ideal physical tools with top intangibles in college but that will be much more difficult at the next level --- A thumper whose best fit will most likely come in a 3-4 scheme where he can bang inside and won't be asked to cover a lot of ground --- A very good football player but was never the top pro prospect that some made him out to be --- Can be an effective NFL player in the right role / situation.
